City of Churches City of Churches

Adelaide

The vicinity that is now city of Adelaide was own by the Kaurna tribe. Even before the arrival of first English settlers to South Australia, the Kaurnas had undergo epidemics of smallpox and other disease.

Port Adelaide was first sighted in 1831, and discovered by Captain John Jones in 1834, was formally proclaimed a harbour in 1837.

The site for the city was chosen in 1836 by  Surveyor-General, Colonel William Light and named after Queen Adelaide, wife of the William IV. Adelaide was founded with a proclamation under a gum tree at Glenelg.

Adelaide has no dreadful convict history - free people settled it.

The city was designed along a clearly defined grid pattern with the two major centers - Adelaide Central and North Adelaide. The effect was to be a city which looked like a square figure eight. The result is still evident today.

 In 1838 population estimate was 6 000. Total livestock was approx. 480 horses, 2 500 cattle, 28 000 sheep.

German settlers, led by Pastor Kavel arrive on the Prince George and settle at Klemzig .

Just in 2 years – 1840 population estimate is 14 600.

City lacked fresh drinking water. There may have been a shortage of it but mostly there was too much of it. On several occasions a large parte of the old town were flooded.

Due to the depressed financial system in 1842 - 642 out of 1,915 houses in Adelaide were vacant and 216 were in ruins.

The discovery of silver in the Adelaide Hills in 1841, and copper near Kapunda in 1842 looked very promising. But discovery of gold NSW, and in Victoria, affected Adelaide. There was a mass exodus of the male population to the goldfields and Adelaide was nearly deserted.

Adelaide was the first Australian capital city to be connected by telegraph with London in 1874.The University of Adelaide was the first in Australia to be able to admit women to degrees in 1881.

Once known as the City of Churches, Adelaide today is far from a puritan’s heaven. Now it is also a progressive city of admirable social programs.

South Australia was the first Australian State to decriminalize homosexual relations between consenting male adults in private in 1975 followed by The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 - making discrimination on the grounds of sex or marital status in employment, education, accommodation and the provision of goods and services unlawful; the first such Act in Australia.

Adelaide today:

With a population of nearly a million people Adelaide is Australia's fourth largest city.

The entire Adelaide Hills district supports a marvelous array of native and modified landscapes.

Adelaide's surroundings are known for its beautiful white sand beaches. The city it’s self combines boulevards of galleries, museums and tranquil botanic gardens with boulevards lined with cafe's, restaurants, clubs and bars. Many of the original buildings were beautifully restored. These add a colonial charm to an otherwise contemporary city centre, which is surrounded by parkland.
