Hobart is the 2nd oldest city in the country and Australia's smallest capital city. City rests at the foot of Mount Wellington and on the banks of serene Derwent River. Tasmanian Aboriginal people of Mouheneer tribe had lived here for thousands of years.
In 1803 the Lady Nelson sailed from Sydney; most of the people on board were soldiers and settlers, but 21 men and three women were Tasmanian – than “Van Diemen’s Land’s” first convicts. The site of Hobart Town in the early 1800's was largely selected because of the presence of fresh water. For about the first 10 years there were more convicts than free settlers. Hobart was named after Robert Hobart, Earl of Buckinghamshire, England’s Secretary of State for War and Colonial Secretary. By 1827 Hobart was a prosperous port with an estimated residents of 5 000. During the 1820s martial law was proclaimed, which gave white soldiers the right to arrest or shoot on sight any Aboriginal. Aboriginal people were hunted and killed and by 1876 Tasmania's last Aborigine was dead.
Hobart has been capable to retain a good share out of its colonial heritage. The waterfront has always been the cultural heart and the centre of Hobart’s life. City has a picturesque history of hotels, taverns and inns. At one stage there was one pub for every 16 homes in Hobart. In the 1800s pubs were gathering places where farmers, convicts and sailors could sip their beer, have a meal and sleep, and were also entertainment venues for dancing, wrestling, gambling and cock fights.
The most famous of Hobart's industries is the Cadbury - Schweppes factory at Claremont where chocolates and confectionery have been made since 1920.
Bear in mind the island’s southerly location makes for very cold winters – with snow June, July and August so don’t plan swimming or camping at that time of year.
