SYDNEY

The Sydney region has been inhabited for at least 50,000 years.. On April 29, 1770, on Possession Island, Captain James Cook claimed the whole east coast of Australia for King George III and called it New South Wales.

The First Fleet led by Captain Arthur Phillip, set sail for Botany Bay on May 13, 1787. They arrived at Botany Bay on the 18th of January 1788. Sydney was named in honour of Thomas Townshend, Baron Sydney (1733-1800), the minister responsible for the Colony. Due to epidemic disease - smallpox or chicken pox Eora people -  the Aboriginal population of the Sydney basin by the early 1800s had been reduced to only 10 percent of the 1788 estimate. When convict transportation to Australia ceased in 1840, citizens finally began to discard their convict mark. This was followed two years later by an act, which declared Sydney's status as a city.

Sydney's first newspaper was the Sydney Gazette.

In1879 International Exhibition was held in Sydney.

World War II – in May 1942 four Japanese submarines were destroyed in Sydney Harbour., The Japanese mother submarine bombed afterwards Bondi and Rose Bay. In1960s Australia was drawn into the Vietnam War. The famous Sydney Opera House opened in 1973. Large-scale immigration from Southeast Asia started.

In 2000 Sydney was host to Olympic Games.
